Reducing Sepsis Mortality A Case for Quality Improvement

The Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) and the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) is offering a free archived webcast to address CIHI’s national view of sepsis study.

Through monitoring their Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio (HSMR), Canadian hospitals have identified sepsis as an area for quality improvement. Sepsis, a condition resulting from the body’s response to severe infection, is a complex syndrome and a leading cause of mortality.

Severe sepsis is associated with high mortality worldwide as well as considerable health care resource use. International collaborative efforts have been undertaken with the goal of reducing sepsis mortality.

Aligned with these international efforts and Safer Healthcare Now! interventions, hospitals and health care providers in Canada have implemented evidence-informed initiatives with the purposeful aim to reduce sepsis mortality rates. Through sharing experiences and lessons learned, health care professionals can discover continued opportunities for improvement when caring for patients with this highly complex condition.

The webcast provides an opportunity to hear from hospitals and health care providers regarding clinical insights and best practice initiatives targeted at reducing sepsis mortality.
