This week’s Going Green! features Timmins and District Hospital (TDH) for their energy efficiency projects and subsequent incentive funding.
In December 2009, TDH implemented a 13-month energy retrofit project that was awarded $172,150 in incentive funding from Union Gas’ EnerSmart program, which aims to promote high efficiency in natural gas processes, steam, HVAC and hot water heating through equipment incentives that help reduce project paybacks. The TDH project also projected a 33% reduction of overall energy consumption, which included a reduction of natural gas consumption of approximately 750,000 cubic meters annually.
The project focused on retrofitting fundamental components of the facility’s infrastructure in order to lower natural gas, electricity, and water consumption, subsequently reducing the facility’s environmental footprint. Some highlights of the projects include:
- Air volume scheduling for the natural gas-fired make-up air system in the building based on occupancy.
- Installing precise digital control systems to regulate “night set-back” and the right zone-to-zone warm air management throughout the building.
- Reconfiguring the operation of the natural gas-fired hot water and steam boilers, using smaller, more efficient gas-fired units that are fully equipped with precise linkage controls and economizers to recover waste heat from the flue gases.
- Reducing steam losses and using hot water instead of steam for space heating applications where it was more efficient to do so.
“The numbers are in and we are happy to report all targets were met or exceeded,” said Tim Prokopetz, Material Management/Biomed Manager at TDH. “For several years, T&DH has been very active in the area of energy conservation and demand management and we’ve managed to effectively maintain stable utility costs.”
