HealthAchieve Award Winners 

The following awards were presented at HealthAchieve 2011 which took place on November 7, 8 and 9 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Nursing Leadership Award

The 2011 Margret Comack Award of Excellence in Nursing Leadership was awarded to Sue Matthews, Interim President and CEO, Niagara Health System. This award is designed to acknowledge the outstanding leadership of an individual nurse in a senior leadership position who is employed in a member organization of the Ontario Hospital Association.

Leading Practices Award

HealthAchieve, in cooperation with Longwoods Publishing, presented the 2011 Leading Practices Electronic Display award under the overall theme “Leadership”. Leadership - particularly in healthcare - often has a focus on creating a better future.  With this as a guiding principle, awards were presented in the following categories:

  • Governance and Integration – St. Joseph’s Care Group in Thunder Bay, for their entry entitled, Leading Change Collaboratively for Enhanced Interprofessional Practice
  • Patient Safety & Quality – Trillium Health Centre, for their submission entitled, A Nurse-Led Clinical Protocol: Significant Reductions in Unnecessary Urinary Catheters and Overall Catheter Prevalence at Trillium Health Centre
  • Access to Care – Windsor Regional Hospital, for their entry entitled, Polarizing MRI Wait Times
  • Patient Experience – Hamilton Health Sciences, for their entry entitled, Patient Experience Mapping
  • Innovation – North Bay Regional Health Centre, for their entry entitled, Emergency Department Physician – Speed Sensitive Scheduling
  • Best of the Best Leading Practices – Trillium Health Centre                                                       

The Leading Practices Electronic Display offers provinces, regions, hospitals, healthcare institutions and health management organizations, locally and abroad, the opportunity to share their leading practices and leadership initiatives.  The Displays showcase new thinking and new ideas in the delivery, policy and administration of healthcare.

Small Rural and Northern Health Care Award

The winner of the 2011 Small Rural and Northern Health Care Award of Excellence went to Katrina Wilson, President and CEO of Hanover and District Hospital and her partners from the Grey Bruce Health Network including:

  • Maureen Solecki, President and CEO, Grey Bruce Health Services
  • Paul Davies, President and CEO, South Bruce Grey Health Services
  • Sandra Coleman, Executive Director, South West Community Care Access Center
  • Andrea Rawn, Program Coordinator, Evidence Based Care Program, Grey Bruce Health Network

This prestigious award recognizes innovation and excellence in the delivery of patient care within a small, rural and/or northern hospital and is open to individuals or teams who are employees, medical staff, volunteers or trustees. 

Ted Freedman Award

The 2011 Ted Freedman Award was awarded to the Canadian Patient Safety Institute and Canadian Health Services Research Foundation, (CHSRF) for their joint submission on Workshops for Effective Governance for Quality and Patient Safety.
The Ted Freedman award recognizes ‘Innovation in Education’ programs that advocate and enable education in health, health services or health management at a healthcare organization.
