Introducing the Canadian Certified Physician Executive Program

In 2010, the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) and the Canadian Society of Physician Executives (CSPE) developed the Canadian Certified Physician Executive (CCPE) program, the first national standards-based assessment for physicians in leadership roles.  To earn the designation, candidates must submit an application for certification supported by an assessment of leadership competencies by three referees.  A panel of physicians reviews all applications in a peer review process to determine whether certification will be granted.

In May 2011, the first 29 recipients of the CCPE were recognized during the annual Canadian Conference on Physician Leadership, including 12 physicians from Ontario.

Jack Barkin, Chief of Staff (Humber River Regional Hospital)

Adam Cwinn, Medical Director Critical Care, Emergency and Trauma; Head, Emergency (The Ottawa Hospital)

Gary Garber, Head, Division of Infectious Diseases (The Ottawa Hospital)

Gary Ing, Chief of Staff (Windsor Regional Hospital)

Peter Kuling, Lead Physician (The Ottawa Hospital Academic Family Health Team); Unit Medical Director (Riverside Campus)

Martin Lees, Former VP, Chief Medical Executive and Chair, Medical Advisory Committee (Royal Victoria Hospital)

Nancy Merrow, Chief of Staff and Medical Director of Palliative Care (Southlake Regional Health Centre)

Sandip SenGupta, Medical Director, Clinical Laboratories; Deputy Head, Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine (Kingston General Hospital and Hotel Dieu Hospital)

Murray Treloar, Chief of Staff (Lakeridge Health Corporation)

Nancy Whitmore, Chief of Staff / VP Medical Affairs (St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital)

Homer Yang, Professor and Chair; Head of Anesthesiology (The Ottawa Hospital)

Physicians awarded the CCPE have demonstrated that they have the leadership capabilities, knowledge and skills needed for successful performance and, more important, to direct, influence and orchestrate change in Canada's complex health care system.
