e-Learning Module: Freedom of Information Primer

On January 1, 2012, Ontario hospitals will become subject to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA). Hospital personnel will be involved in FIPPA compliance to varying degrees depending upon their position or function. Basic FIPPA training for staff will help facilitate the hospital’s responsiveness to Freedom of Information (FOI) access requests.

To support hospitals with their FIPPA preparation, the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) has developed an FOI e-learning module. Upon completing the module, participants will have a good understanding of:

  • Roles & Responsibilities
  • Right of Access
  • Privacy Protection
  • Exclusions & Exemptions
  • Processing FOI Access Requests
  • Hospital Obligations under FIPPA
  • Implications for Hospital Employees

The module allows participants to learn at their own pace and upon completion of the module they are awarded a certificate of achievement. The interactive nature of the courses enriches the learning experience, while program quizzes gauge and enhance students’ knowledge. A variety of learning styles are addressed and facilitation of learning occurs not only through text, but also through activities and quizzes. The web-based module also offers a built in Learning Management System (LMS) so employers can track their employees’ progress on both an individual and collective basis.

For more information about the module, please contact Katie Byrne at kbyrne@oha.com or visit www.oha.com/discoverycampus.
