Two years after its official groundbreaking, the SickKids Centre for Research and Learning celebrated the Topping Off of the tower. This is a key milestone in the construction timeline; it represents the moment concrete construction reaches the highest point of the concrete structural elements of the building.
Since the shovels hit the ground on May 4, 2010, the building has risen to 21 storeys of laboratory and learning spaces. With most of the exterior elements nearing completion, workers will now focus on the interior space, including fit out and finishing.
The tower will be the new home for more than 2,000 SickKids scientists, trainees and child health research staff. The state-of-the-art laboratory and learning facilities are designed to support the collaboration that results in research findings, and the critical links between discovery and its application in the care of a sick child.
The building is designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects Inc. in association with HDR Inc. The construction contractor is EllisDon Corporation.
The construction is on time, on budget and the building is expected to officially open in Fall 2013.
